Haweswater - Reservoir in the English Lake District

 

Haweswater reservoir was created in 1929 as a reservoir for Manchester. In so doing, the settlements of Mardale and Measand were demolished. It is on the famous Coast 2 Coast walking path and many people visit the area when the water levels are low to see the remains of the settlements. There are also a number of attractions around Haweswater, including Shap Abbey.

 

Nearby Ullswater is a popular venue for sailing, and there are many boat hire businesses, including the Glenridding Sailing Centre. For those looking to explore the lake in a more relaxed manner, then the famous Ullswater Steamers sail from Glenridding to Howtown and Pooley Bridge. It is also a great place for fishing. As well as sailing, boating and cruising on the lake itself, Haweswater is surrounded by some great hill-walking and tends to be much quieter than the Helvellyn fells.To the west of Haweswater is the majestic Place Fell, and the old Roman road of High Street. Other notable peaks in the area include Kidsty Pike and Harter Fell.
